Flaky skin can occur on the face as well as on the body (legs, hands and feet). This peeling can be the result of everyday dehydration, as well as a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis.
To treat dry, flaky skin, look for moisturizing creams that restore moisture.
Flakes usually arise because your skin is dehydrated. Fortunately, there is a lot that can be done about dry skin (also called xerosis cutis in medical terms) .
Small changes in your lifestyle and the right care can make a world of difference. Derma cosmetic products help dry skin to be optimally hydrated and soft again.
Causes of flaky skin:
There can be all kinds of causes for flaky skin. It could be an allergy, an infection or eczema, but often the cause is much simpler. And the solution isn't complicated either.
'CAUSES OF SKIN FLAKES ARE OFTEN A SHORTAGE OF MOISTURE AND, IN ADDITION, ABNORMAL SKIN FLAKES'
Dry, flaky skin can be the result of a specific skin condition.
We have listed them for you.
psoriasis
Psoriasis is accompanied by inflamed patches of red skin, covered with thick and silvery white scales. The skin condition often appears on the knees, elbows, lower back, palms and soles of the feet. Psoriasis requires ongoing treatment to prevent and heal dry, flaky skin.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis
Flaky skin on the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose and behind the ears can be a result of seborrheic dermatitis and often manifests itself as dandruff.
Actinic keratosis
Loose scaly patches on the skin that have been exposed to the sun in the past can be caused by actinic keratosis. These dark, thick spots can lead to skin cancer if left untreated.
Ichthyosis vulgaris
This common genetic skin condition prevents dead skin cells from shedding naturally, creating a scaly buildup. Mild cases can usually be controlled by using a moisturizing cream.
Where does flaky skin occur?
Scales can appear all over the body. But there are a number of parts where it is by far the most common.
Face/Head
Dry, scaly patches of skin on the scalp, sides of the nose, behind the ears, and on the scalp are commonly caused by seborrheic dermatitis. If the spots are covered with silvery-white scales, this may indicate psoriasis.
Arms and legs
Flaky skin on the hands can be caused by dry skin, eczema, psoriasis or various other skin conditions.
All over the body
Are the flakes not limited to a certain part of your body, but do you have them all over your body? That is also possible. In that case, we recommend that you consult your doctor first. Get the cause determined so you can get the best possible treatment.
Restore the skin barrier and moisture balance.
Some of the causes are easily preventable. Think of drinking alcohol, showering too hot and sunbathing. Other causes are more difficult or impossible to avoid. For example an allergy, eczema or the influence of winter. Then what can you do? We mention 3 products, which you will also find in our webshop.
